Tendinopathy is also known as tendinitis or tendinosis. It often occurs after exerting heavy strain and results in severely impaired function.


Causes of tendinopathy

Tendons are fibrous bands of connective tissue that connect muscles to bones throughout the body. Although the connective tissues are made of strong collagen fibre, they can become overstretched or even torn by overexertion.

The most common tendons affected are the patellar and Achilles tendons, and are mainly down to sports that involve intensive jumping or running. Forearm muscles can also be affected by tennis players and golfers; and also by using the PC mouse for long hours at work.

As a rule, the pain initially only onsets after overuse, for example, after playing sports, but, over time, those affected also become aware of the pain, while they are playing sports or even during simple everyday activities. The RICE method is recommended for treatment – Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Tendinopathy usually resolves in a few days or few weeks maximum.
